| Finally, a trip to LA |
[Jan. 6th, 2006|03:31 pm] |
business takes me to LA next week. Fly in on Tuesday, back on Thursday. Jetlag on Tuesday and work related dining on Wednesday mean I should be available for drinking late both nights.
I have no idea about cell phone access or where I am staying or anything yet, so email me at rysmithjr@gmail.com to make plans. |

| Long Overdue Update |
[Nov. 14th, 2005|02:10 pm] |
I've moved to Dublin to start a new job with newbay Software. I'm their Online Services Manager, building a new presence for their FoneBlog software (cameraphone blogging).
I moved up last Sunday and started work on Monday. I'm living in Clonsilla, a suburb on the north side of Dublin. The house is owned by the brother of my friend Paul from Cork, shared with 3 guys. It's a bit divey, a bit like a college house again, but it's cheap and 5 minutes from the train. I'll probably keep looking for a place to call "home" but this is a good crash pad for now.
The job is cool, with a fairly open set of goals, so I am setting the direction we're taking. I won't be talking too much about it yet, I'll wait until we're ready to launch the new thing. The office is just alongside Merrion Square, 5 minutes from Pearse St Station, so my commute is simple.
After work, I've been going out to eat and walking around the city centre to get more familiar. So far, I've mostly stuck around Grafton St, Temple Bar, Dame St. I had a great meal at Nico's on Dame St, a small Italian restaurant. The filet was fantastic, a change from many Irish restaurants who can't seem to cook a steak medium rare if their life depended on it. A couple of drinks at the Dice Bar one night (one of the few bars here that have Maker's Mark) and a cigar & Johnny Black at Bruxelle's over the weekend. One decent cigar shop called The Decent Cigar Co, on Grafton St. 5am grocery shopping at the 24 hr Tesco near my house.
I've played a few nights of poker, mostly at the new Sporting Emporium. Some bigwig businessman named Dermot Desmond opened it, and it's the only casino in Ireland (that I know of) that has a bar. Casinos are illegal here, but by being Private (Member's Only) Clubs, they seem to skirt the law. They certainly don't hide anything, in fact the Sporting Emporium was recommended by a Gardai when giving me directions.
I'm going to track my wins & losses here, in an effort to keep my playing solid.
8/Nov Sporting Emporium €150+10 buy-in Texas freezeout. 43 runners, final 4 split €6k. €1200 Cash-out. 10/Nov Fitzwilliam Card Room, €50 Round of Each Cash Game, €300 buy-in, 2 hrs, €0 cash-out. 11/Nov Sporting Emporium €100+10 buy-in Hold-Em freezeout. Out in first hand, JJ vs big blind AA. 11/Nov Sporting Emporium €50 Texas Cash Game. €250 buy-in, 6 hrs, €1100 cash-out. 12/Nov Sporting Emporium €300+30 buy-in Texas freezeout. 40 runners. Split a satellite so entry was only €195. Out in about 20th, no hands of note. 12/Nov Sporting Emporium €100 Omaha Cash Game. €500 buy-in, 4 hrs, €1500 cash-out.
So, I am showing a profit of €2350 this week. Not a bad start to my Dublin life. |

| one year closer to being a dirty old man |
[Jun. 18th, 2005|06:54 pm] |
if you've ever wondered what it's like to be 37, let me say it's really no different that 27 (for me, anyway). The funniest thing is all the shocked faces around when they ask my age. Last year, I played with subtracting a decade and no one was the wiser.
I like 37, except that all the single gals I'm meeting here at all early 20s, and that's just tough to overcome.
oh well, off to the Raven for a few cocktails, and see if the game is any different this year... |

[Aug. 22nd, 2003|02:49 pm] |
I just noticed that my post about moving journal homes didn't make it here. I have consilidated all my online entities into one, at home at http://fixer.vigilante.net
I won't be posting here too much, but still check my frinds list here, so I'm not really gone... |

| Updating my contact list |
[Aug. 18th, 2003|08:32 pm] |
Time for a spring cleaning, just a small bit late...I just started using Plaxo to keep my contact list current (and then import into zerodegrees.com), and realized I never really kept an address book, mostly relying on addresses in saved mail.
That means I only have a handful of people in my Plaxo address book, and that leaves it a bit scarce. So if you know me and think we should have current contact info on each other, send me a vcard attachment OR go to http://fixer.vigilante.net/vcard.html and add in your current details. |

| New Flat...just in time? |
[Jul. 19th, 2003|01:43 am] |
I got the flat I was hoping for. A shared house in Sunday's Well, right at the top of the Shakey Bridge (a Cork landmark). sharing with 3 women in their later 20s-early 30s in a nice sized house with a HUGE but wildly overgrown garden up the hill in the back.
Just after I got the call, I was having second thoughts about what I want to do for work. The film studio still hasn't panned out, and the wireless gig in Dublin is just setting off alarm bells in my head. I updated the CV and sent it around to some of my network of associates. Found out there are a couple effects studios in LA looking for admins, and one in London, as well as a strangely interesting wireless contract that might come up in Iraq. can you say hazardous duty pay?
So, I'm not sure what's going to happen. I could stay here, but I am tired of the hand to mouth and need some inspiring work. |

| random musings |
[Jul. 12th, 2003|12:23 am] |
today is my 2 year anniverary in Ireland!
heading off to Dublin in the morning, for the weekend festival called Witnness . My buddy Rich Hawtin is playing tomorrow night, so I am supposed to meet up with him somewhere in Dublin tomorrow then head to Punchestown Racecourse where the festival is held.
A load of people will be camping out at the racecourse, but I'll head back in to Dublin with Rich and crash at a b&b, the back out on Sunday on a bus. I haven't planned anything, it's all on a whing and a prayer, but sure doesn't it all work out somehow?
every time I see Meg Ryan in a film, I am reminded of my eldest sister, Cindy. Their personalities are so much alike. No point to this message.
I bought some new jeans today, for the first time since moving here. I've been losing weight, and all my trousers had become quite baggy and cinched in by my belt. It felt odd to wear properly fitting jeans again, and in a size I haven't work since high school. yeah, Iwas a fatass even back then, but I'm on track to lose another 4 inches off the wait by the end of the year. I don't mind being big, I know I will never be small, but it will be nice to be able to ship anywhere and have some reasonable chance of something in my size! |

| gonna sip Bacardi like it's my birthday... |
[Jun. 18th, 2003|05:06 pm] |
I'm going out tonight for dinner with 25 friends, taking over the dining room of this little trattoria run by a family of brothers from Italy, cooking like their mama taught them. Then off for drinks at a newish bar called Cleavers, which used to be a butcher shop.
I think I managed to invite all my current crushes, so I should be in flirty heaven. Birthday boys get away with a lot... |

| a sunday evening meal |
[Jun. 9th, 2003|12:29 am] |
I borrowed a friend's boxed set of the Godfather Trilogy last week, and it occured to me I have never tried Clemnza's recipe for pasta sauce. So tonight, I did.
Perfection.
"Heh, come over here, kid, learn something. You never know, you might have to cook for twenty guys someday. You see, you start out with a little bit of oil. Then you fry some garlic. Then you throw in some tomatoes, tomato paste, you fry it; ya make sure it doesn't stick. You get it to a boil; you shove in all your sausage and your meatballs; heh?... And a little bit o' wine. An' a little bit o' sugar, and that's my trick."
I added red peppers, red chilis, onions, oregano, basil, some dried crushed chilis, some cab sauv, a couple spoons of raw cane sugar, and some zuchini (called aubergines over here) to a can of chopped tomatos and a can of tomatoe puree. I only could get chorizo sausage, but it's spicy enough. Served this over some fresh taglietelli with some fresh grated parmesan, and 12 ounces of grilled sirloin steak next to it.
Why does anyone open a bottle of pre-made sauce? |

| I owe you |

I need to write about my friends here, like Andrew and Tom and Kimberley and Natalie. I need to write about the nutters who I laugh at and with and almost get in fights with and for. I need to write about the work coming and going and potentials for work. I need to write about the begrudgery of Cork and how hard it is to rise above it here. I need to write about turning 35 in a week and a half. I need to write about my training and eating. I need to write about my thoughts of love and my ever changing emotional needs. I need to write about my cool flatmates moving out due to the psycho German flatmate and me being stuck here and possibly being stuck with double rent or moving out. I need to write about the fantastic spring/summer weather, even with the occasional rain. I need to write about my new film production company. Most of all, I need to sleep. |

| dinosaur training |
[Apr. 16th, 2003|03:27 pm] |
the weather has turned decidedly spring-like! My ankle is finally healing enough to let me stand on my tiptoes and take a bit of weight, so I think it's safe to start training lightly again. But, since the weather is so nice, and I am working from home now, I can't be arsed to get to the Mardyke Arena gym all the way across town just for a workout. so, I am going to go old school style and train in the back garden with stuff.
I have a hill in the back, maybe 30 meters in length at a 45 degree pitch, which I can do sprints up & down or slower with sandbags or kegs partly filled with water. all sorts of things I can do with sandbags and kegs, from farmer's walks to bearhugs to overhead presses. I'll get a truck tire and sledgehammer and do some swings and tire flips. I'll get a heavy duty swiss ball from Dublin and work on my stretching & flexibility. I will also start again on Matt Furey's "Royal Court" bodyweight exersizes.
Now, I just need to motivate myself more to get out of bed earlier in the morning! |

I'm feeling nostalgic, or just missing bits of LA...7 drunken nights at O'Briens main st...deciding between Johnny's pastrami or Tito's tacos...dive bars like the drawing room or the blue room or hunanos...taking trojan out for a walk to Fred 62 and letting the ladies come to me (and him, the big cutie)...cruising past the queues at places like the viper or smalls with spach...dinner with mr fiber at prizzi's then coffee & pool at the pig... |

| nothing out of the ordinary |
[Feb. 23rd, 2003|11:29 am] |
was in scotland last weekend for the first 6 Nations rugby match of the season. Ireland won handily, 36-6. twas a great weekend, Edinburgh is a gorgeous city.
got home to find that there was soem confusion at work and they thought I was back a day before I was, so the boss had to cover a shift and he was pissed. On top of the place not making money and him trying to find someone to blame, he told me his brother (the owner) said to fire me. so, I have some free time on my hands.
one of my consulting projects is giving me 2 days a week, which will bring in more money than the cafe, so I'm not in a bad spot. with the free time and not having to deal with idiot people all day, life will be a lot more relaxed too.
Another monthly night out with the PRoC 0 www.peoplesrepublicofcork.com . it started out fairly slow, but somehow things wound up pretty good. I hate having to choose between women to flirt with...if you choose one over the rest, you've likely screwed up your chances with the other ones, but if you don't choose one, you'll not get anywhere anyway. then there's also the "on stage" feeling when it's a big group and you know people are watching, looking for some gossip...somehow, I get involved in the gossip even when nothing happens, so I just go with it ;-) |
